Style Code 8: Dressing the 'Y'
Dress Code Formal's design team has submitted a series of tips for each type of female silhouette. There are 7 different shapes and each Style Code will cover one of the body types. Read all the Style Codes to discover your silhouette and find the perfect bridesmaid dress, evening gown or special occasion dress.
"Y" shaped women tend to have broad shoulders and narrow hips. They tend to be described as "athletic" in build and have very attractive slender necks. Try a V-neck when looking for a bridesmaid dress or evening gown, as this will draw the eye downwards, while enhancing the beauty of your collarbones and accenting your swan-like neck.
DCF design team suggests that you focus on interesting skirts while shopping for your perfect dress. Interesting skirts with detail and embellishments will help to fill out your lower half. The idea is that you seem heavier on top, so we would like to weigh your bottom half down, so the attention is no longer in one area but traveling down and around each curve equally. This creates a very appealing shape for the eye and completely plays tricks on it! Try to look for skirts with a wide, dropped waist band or a full-pleated skirt. Make sure to try trumpet skirts if you haven't before. The flare at the bottom does wonders for balancing out broader shoulders.
Do not forget that all of our trims and embellishments are pretty easily removed. We like to make sure that you know you have the option of altering the style of dress if you like the shape, but not a detail.
